Frequently Asked Questions
A dental hygienist is a qualified healthcare professional – a non-dentist specialist trained in dental hygiene. This qualification is obtained through completing a higher vocational school or a bachelor’s degree program.
Dental tartar and plaque cause gum inflammation and gradually damage the supporting structures of the teeth. This leads to bone loss and, eventually, tooth loss.
To prevent this, regular professional cleaning and tartar removal are essential — something only a dental hygienist can provide. Proper home care is also crucial; your hygienist will instruct you and demonstrate the correct brushing technique.
Ideally in childhood — from around 3–4 years of age, once the child is able to cooperate.
- Gums appear swollen, red, and tender to the touch
- Bleeding occurs during brushing
- Gum recession develops
- You or others notice bad breath
- Initial examination
- Professional tooth cleaning
- Instruction on proper brushing techniques and tools
- Recall – a system of regular check-up visits
A dental hygienist is authorized to perform professional teeth whitening — a complex chemical process in which the active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) whitens the teeth.
Different methods can be used: home whitening, in-office whitening, or a combination of both (in-office whitening with home follow-up). The most suitable method is chosen individually.
The basic prerequisite: healthy teeth and gums!
